Ferdinand Magellan...

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese sailor employed by Spain, was the first person to sail westwards across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He did this because the Spanish wanted to find a route to the rich spice islands in southeastern Asia, which were unclaimed by any foreign power. Although it was not Magellan’s original intention, one of his ships continued the voyage westwards, eventually arriving back in Europe. By completing this remarkable voyage, its crew became the first people to sail all the way around the world..
